Otto Uno: A Biophilic Design for Sustainable Social Housing

Connecting Humans, Architecture, Nature, and the City

The design of Otto Uno, a social housing residential building project in Punta del Este, Uruguay, is a testament to the power of biophilic design and sustainable architecture. Designed by Natalia Ottonello and Ian Guevara, Otto Uno aims to improve the city's architectural aesthetics while providing affordable and sustainable housing options for its residents.

Inspired by the concept of biophilia, Otto Uno embraces nature as its main source of inspiration. The design team sought to create a biophilic architectural design that would not only enhance the well-being of the building occupants but also contribute to the overall urban environment. By incorporating greenery as an essential element of the project, Otto Uno aims to establish a strong connection between its residents and the natural world.

What sets Otto Uno apart is its commitment to sustainability and affordability. The project aims to enrich the city by improving the quality of life of its residents through contemporary architectural design. The eight-storey condominium building features 36 apartments, with one-, two-, and three-bedroom options. Each apartment has its own green area, adorned with native plants and trees housed in geometrical pots.

The architecture of Otto Uno is defined by the simplicity and elegance of glazing, black aluminium, and wood. The floor-to-ceiling glazing on all facades allows ample natural light to flood the interiors, creating a sense of openness and connection with the surrounding environment. The building's rooftop terrace serves as a communal space where residents can enjoy nature and a variety of amenities, including a swimming pool with a solarium, a recreation lounge area, a fitness centre, and several vegetable gardens.

The rationality and efficiency of the floor plans were essential in fulfilling the requirements of functionality and affordability. Otto Uno's design encourages residents to interact and socialize through the creation of the rooftop terrace, designed like a town square. This dynamic space allows for a wide range of activities and ways to enjoy nature and socialize with fellow residents.

The construction of Otto Uno began in December 2020 and is expected to be completed in November 2022. Once finished, it will become the first sustainable social housing building in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

Recognized for its outstanding design, Otto Uno was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2022 in the category of Architecture, Building, and Structure Design. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills while contributing to quality of life improvements.
